Are we just in a natural cycle?
This is the objection raised most often, and it deserves a real answer rather than a brush-off. The short version: yes, Earth changes naturally, and yes, it has been far hotter in the deep past. But the causes behind those changes can be named, and not one of them is acting now.
The grain of truth. Earth's climate really has swung between cold ice ages and warmer periods many times. Over roughly the last 800,000 years there have been repeated glacial and warm phases. So the instinct that climate changes on its own, without humans, is correct. That part is not in dispute.
What drove the ice age cycles
The ice ages were paced by slow, regular changes in Earth's orbit and the tilt of its axis, known as Milankovitch cycles. These shift how sunlight is distributed across the planet and the seasons, over tens of thousands of years.
On their own these orbital nudges are small. They became large swings because of feedbacks. As a small warming began, the oceans gradually released CO2 and reflective ice retreated, which amplified it. In those cycles CO2 was an amplifier that followed an initial orbital trigger, not the spark.

Why the old mechanism cannot explain the current warming
Speed. Orbital cycles act over tens of thousands of years. They cannot produce a clear warming trend over a single century. The current warming is far too fast to be orbital pacing.
Direction. If the Sun or Earth's orbit were driving things now, recent decades should show a matching push. They do not. Solar output has been flat to slightly lower since the mid-twentieth century, and the slow orbital trend is not in a warming phase. The warming happened anyway.
Order of cause and effect. In the ice age cycles, temperature moved first and CO2 followed and amplified it. Now the order is reversed: CO2 is rising first, from fossil fuels, and temperature is following. The carbon added to the air also carries the chemical fingerprint of ancient fossil carbon, which orbital cycles cannot create.
Bottom line on the cycles
Natural cycles are real, and they show that climate responds to whatever pushes it. But the things that drove them, slow orbital pacing with CO2 as a follower, are not what is happening now. Today the warming is too fast for orbital causes, the Sun is not cooperating with the sceptical explanation, and CO2 from human activity is leading rather than following.
What about the truly hot ages, like the dinosaurs?
Ice ages are one objection. The other is bigger: Earth has been far hotter than today, long before humans existed, so surely this is natural. That is true. It was hotter. But for every past warm period we understand, we can name the cause, and it is always the same kind of thing: something put extra greenhouse gas into the air, and the planet warmed. A sustained hothouse. There was little or no permanent polar ice, sea levels were high, and warm conditions reached close to the poles.
Long stretches of high CO2 went with long stretches of warmth. The link is hard to miss.
A very large pulse of carbon entered the atmosphere and oceans in a short space of geological time, most likely from volcanic activity around the North Atlantic together with carbon released from the sea floor.

This is the clearest deep-time example of carbon driving fast warming, and the closest natural parallel to today. The difference is that the carbon then was released far more slowly than humans are releasing it now.

Even these small wobbles had identifiable natural causes. But they were smaller, slower and patchier than the rapid, worldwide warming measured since the mid-twentieth century. They do not match what is happening now.
The pattern across all of them
Look across the whole list and one thing stands out: every warm period has a clear cause. Sometimes it is geological, such as volcanic eruptions or continents pulling apart. Sometimes it is chemical, a release of carbon into the air and seas. Usually it is both, because the geology is what releases the chemistry. In each case the greenhouse gas went up first and the temperature followed. The deep past is not an argument against human-caused warming. It is a long record of the same mechanism working, over and over.
But none of those causes are present now
This is the part that settles it. Every past warm period had a trigger we can name. Today, not one of those triggers is present.
There is no vast volcanic province erupting. In a normal year, every volcano on Earth combined releases far less CO2 than human activity does. The continents are not rifting in any way that matters on this timescale, and tectonic carbon release is slow and roughly in balance, working over millions of years rather than a century. Earth's orbit is not in a warming phase. The Sun has not brightened, and if anything has dimmed slightly since the mid-twentieth century.
The setting makes it sharper still. We are technically still in an ice age in the long-term sense. The planet has carried permanent ice caps for millions of years, and we live in a mild pause within that cold era. Before industrialisation the slow natural trend was flat to gently cooling. By that clock, this is not a moment the Earth should be warming at all, let alone quickly. Yet the ice is melting and the temperature is climbing fast.
So there is rapid warming, retreating ice, and no geological or chemical cause behind it. Every natural explanation that worked in the past is missing today. The one thing that is new, large and fast is the human burning of fossil fuels. When every other suspect has an alibi, you are left with the one that does not.
What this does not claim. It does not claim natural cycles have stopped, or that the Sun, volcanoes and Earth's orbit no longer matter. They still operate. The claim is narrower and stronger: none of them can account for the timing, speed and pattern of the warming measured over the past century.
